Many people don’t know that there are multiple types of glands that keep your eyes lubricated, but in fact, both your tear glands (technically called your lacrimal glands) and your meibomian glands produce different fluids to keep your eyes hydrated and clean.
Your lacrimal glands produce tears that help clean your eyes and keep them moist. Tears are mostly made of water, which would evaporate off your eyes—but that’s where your meibomian glands come in.
Your meibomian glands are constantly secreting a fine oil that evenly coats the surface of your eyes. This oil prevents the water in your tears from evaporating too fast, so your eyes stay hydrated more efficiently.
Together, these glands play a key role in your overall eye health, provided that they both work properly. If one of your glands develops a blockage, you may soon begin to notice irritation across your eyes. We’ll be ready to help resolve your blockage and improve your eye health.
